How Minarets Are Made

Once Hussein asked Nasruddin, “Do you know how tall minarets are built, all the way up at the top of the mosque dome?”

Nasruddin replied, “Very simple. Minarets come from deep wells — turned upside down.”

There are several versions of this story, in which young Nasruddin, encounters for the first time, and then explains the origin of, a minaret, a smooth tower topped with a dome that is the most noticeable part of an Islamic mosque and of many Turkish villages. The call for prayer observed five times daily by devout Muslims is made from the top of the minaret, where the muezzin‘s strong voice is best heard by the surrounding community.

The version given here is the least bawdy of the several I’ve seen.
