Origin and Destination

“Where do we come from, and where do we go?” Hussein asked.

“We come from the very same place to which we departed.”

“What is the hereafter like?”

Nasruddin observed, “The afterlife must be terribly frightening.”

“Why do you say that?” said Ali.

“It is my observation that most babies arrive crying, and that most people die weeping as well.”

Your Daily Nasruddin

The endless cycle of birth and death is apparent to every person, but its mystery remains hidden to most.

Where have we come from, and where are we heading? These are two of the most important question to ask ourself — or a reliable teacher.

Is the afterlife scary merely because it’s unknown? Why are we not frightened of our birth in the same way we fear our death? Aren’t they simply flip sides of the same coin?

Human existence is tied to suffering. How can you overcome sorrow?

Don’t let up the sorrow
Death and birth and death and birth and death and birth
He says “Bring that bottle kindly
And I’ll pad your purse-
I’ve got a head full of quandary
And a mighty, mighty, mighty thirst.”

— Joni Mitchell, “Don’t Interrupt the Sorrow”
