Mourning their Mother

Once young Nasruddin had his little chicks walking around with tiny black cloths tied around their necks.

Hussein came by and asked, “Nasruddin, what’s that about?”

“Shhh, be quiet!” Nasruddin whispered, “Show some respect for the grieving chicks. Last night, their mother went on to the other world — and now they are in mourning.”

Nasruddin is here demonstrating a false piety by dressing the chicks to observe a traditional ritual of mourning — wearing black — while obscuring his own culpability in their mother’s death, the chicken soup which he savored last night for supper. If he kept his own mouth shut then, he wouldn’t have to shush people to respect the mourning birds the next day.
